Partial COD

Overview

Cash on Delivery (COD) orders can have a higher risk of Return to Origin (RTO) since customers do not make any payment commitment at the time of placing an order. Partial COD helps reduce this risk by allowing sellers to collect a small token amount from customers upfront while remaining amount is collected upon delivery.

With Partial COD enabled, customers pay the configured token amount online at checkout, and the order is created as a Partial COD order in Smartbiz.

What You Can Do

With Partial COD, you can:

  • Collect a fixed token or booking amount from customers before they place a COD order.
  • Currently, we do not support % of order value as the token amount

When Should You Use This Feature

Use Partial COD when:

  • You are experiencing high COD RTO rates and want to reduce low-intent or fake orders
  • You want to continue offering COD while reducing associated risks
  • You want customers to show higher purchase commitment before processing COD orders

How to activate the feature

Step 1: Go to SmartBiz Home page and locate RTO reduction suite in the left panel, above Settings

Step 2: You will find “Partial COD” feature, switch on the toggle

Step 3: Enter the value you want as a booking amount

Step 4: Save changes by clicking on the “Save” button at the bottom of the settings page

Order Management and Reporting

Partial COD order information is available in:

  1. Smartbiz Native OMS: You can identify Partial COD orders and view relevant order details directly in Smartbiz Native OMS. The payment method will be Partial COD.
  2. Analytics Reports: Partial COD order details are also present in Analytics > Report section. In the “Business Order Report”, the payment method is updated to Partial COD, while the order total remains the same (i.e. not the amount to be collected)

You can use these reports to monitor volume of Partial COD orders, manage day-to-day operations and estimate the business impact of the feature.

Important Guidelines

  • Partial COD orders should be processed carefully. You should not directly use our shipping integrations of Shiprocket, Ship with Amazon and OMS partners via Smartbiz Order management tab.
  • You will not find these shipping options for partial COD orders while processing orders on Smartbiz’s order management tab.
  • To process these orders, go to the portals of respective courier partners and create orders manually. Keep in mind to enter two different values for amount to be collected and total order value.
